How we compare amino acids

Amino acid supplements split into two camps. BCAAs (branched-chain: leucine, isoleucine, valine) were the standard for years; EAAs (essential aminos: all nine) have overtaken them in the research because complete amino profiles drive muscle protein synthesis more effectively than BCAAs alone.

Both work as standalone serving categories only when dietary protein is low or training is fasted. If you hit your daily protein target, dedicated amino acid supplements add little on top. If you do use them, leucine content is the single most important number - around 2.5 to 3g per serving triggers maximal MPS.

This page ranks every UK amino acid product by cost per serving. BCAAs and EAAs sit in separate shelves so you can compare like for like. Ratio (e.g. 2:1:1 leucine to isoleucine to valine) is standard for BCAAs; for EAAs the total amino profile matters more than the ratio.

Independent and transparent, with every price shown alongside the date it was checked. Here's what goes into each score.

Cost normalised to £/25g
Every bag divided by its true protein weight, so you see the real cost of a scoop across any size or brand.

Protein density, measured
Protein per 100g from the product's own nutrition panel, so a 90% isolate and a 72% concentrate are never compared on bag price alone.

Every price carries its date
Prices come from the retailer's own listing, never an RRP, and each one is shown with the day it was last checked so you can judge how current it is.

No sponsored placements
Rank order is cost per 25g of protein. Some outbound links earn commission; none of them buy a position in the table.

Questions, answered.

EAA in most cases. EAAs contain all nine essential amino acids including the three BCAAs, so they cover the same ground plus the rest of the amino profile needed for MPS. BCAAs are cheaper but less complete; only pick BCAAs if price-per-serving matters more than peak effectiveness.
