How we compare pre-workout

Pre-workout is driven by formulation rather than headline price. The research-backed ingredients are caffeine for energy and focus, beta-alanine for endurance buffering, and L-citrulline for blood flow and pump. Effective doses are 150 to 300mg caffeine, 3.2 to 6.4g beta-alanine, and around 6g citrulline per serving.

This page ranks every UK pre-workout by cost per serving. Stim and stim-free formulas sit in separate shelves so you can compare like for like without a heavy caffeine load distorting the picture if you train late or react poorly to stimulants.

Proprietary blends hide the dose of each ingredient behind a total weight, making it impossible to verify whether the formula meets evidence-based thresholds. WheyWise flags products that disclose full doses on the label so you can judge the formulation on its own merits.

Methodology

How we rank every bag.

Independent, transparent, and updated weekly. Here's what goes into each score.

01
Cost normalised to £/25g
Every bag divided by its true protein weight, so you see the real cost of a scoop across any size or brand.
02
Protein quality, not just %
Protein %, leucine and digestibility feed the Performance score. A 90% isolate and a 90% vegan blend are not the same.
03
Clean-label audit
Ingredient count, artificial sweeteners, added sugars, third-party certifications. 0 to 100 score.
04
Social and review signals
Weekly purchase volume and weighted review scores surface what people actually re-buy, not just what ranks on search.

Questions, answered.

No. Research shows 3 to 6mg per kilogram of body weight is the effective range — around 150 to 300mg for most adults. Above 300mg you're trading performance for jitters, insomnia and a crash, not adding benefit. Check the caffeine column before picking on headline stimulant strength.
