A clean protein powder is one that passes three checks you can do from the label and the brand's website. We use these three tests for every powder in this guide:
- A short ingredient list. Three ingredients or fewer, with the protein first. An unflavoured powder should be one or two.
- No artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols or gums. No sucralose, acesulfame K, aspartame, sorbitol, maltitol, xanthan gum or guar gum. Stevia or monk fruit is allowed.
- Published independent testing. The brand says, on its own site, that the product is tested by an independent or accredited laboratory for contaminants such as heavy metals, or it holds a certification such as Informed Sport.

Pink Sun Everyday Whey Protein Concentrate comes a close second: its label reads undenatured whey protein concentrate from grass-fed cows' milk plus a trace of sunflower lecithin, which helps it mix. Pink Sun Everyday Whey contains 82g of protein per 100g, or 20.5g in a 25g serving, according to pinksun.co.uk.
Pink Sun Everyday Whey is also cheaper. It costs £1.07 per 25g of protein in the 1kg bag at £35.25 on pinksun.co.uk, against £1.64 for The Organic Protein Company in its 1.2kg bag. That makes The Organic Protein Company about 53% dearer per gram of protein. What the extra money buys is organic certification and a label with no additive at all. Pink Sun noted on its page that the product is in scarce supply, and its 1kg bag was out of stock when we checked, so stock may come and go.

Some is, but clean and tested are two different things. Heavy metal testing checks for contaminants such as lead and cadmium. Informed Sport certification checks every batch for substances banned in sport, which is what drug-tested athletes need.
