Is Sports Fuel Protein Good? Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein Reviewed
Sports Fuel is one of the cheapest protein powders in the UK per gram of protein. We checked who makes it, what is really in Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein, the cost per 25g of protein against Myprotein and Bulk, testing, and what buyers say about the flavours.

Quick answer
Sports Fuel is one of the cheapest protein powders in the UK per gram of protein, but it is a blend, not a straight whey. Buy Sports Fuel Premium Protein: it costs 25p per 25g of protein in the 5kg pouch at £39.99 from Bodybuilding Warehouse, with 23.7g of protein in a 30g scoop, checked 3 October 2026. That is 78% cheaper per gram of protein than Myprotein Impact Whey in its 3.6kg bag. The protein comes from whey concentrate, micellar casein, soy protein isolate and wheat glutamine peptides in an undisclosed ratio, and no Sports Fuel page mentions third-party testing. If you want pure whey, Bulk Pure Whey is the better buy at 93p per 25g of protein. WheyWise read every Sports Fuel label and price on the retailers' own pages for this review.
Sports Fuel is a budget protein brand sold mainly through Bodybuilding Warehouse and Amazon UK, usually in 5kg pouches. This review covers the two protein powders in the range, Sports Fuel Premium Protein and Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix, using the labels and prices on each retailer's own page on 3 October 2026. The taste notes come from buyer reviews on Bodybuilding Warehouse, not from our own testing.

Who makes Sports Fuel protein?
Sports Fuel labels say the products are “manufactured for Sports Fuel” at Unit 1 Guinness Road Trading Estate, Manchester, M17 1SB. That is the same Trafford Park address that Bodybuilding Warehouse, trading as KBF Enterprises Ltd, gives on its contact page, and Bodybuilding Warehouse sells the Sports Fuel range direct. We found no separate Sports Fuel website. On 3 October 2026 the Sports Fuel collection on Bodybuilding Warehouse listed three products: Premium Protein, ANABOLIC Whey Matrix and Creatine Monohydrate Powder.

What is Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix?
Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix is a protein blend that claims 24g of protein per 30g serving, but its Bodybuilding Warehouse page publishes no full nutrition panel, checked 3 October 2026. The page lists the protein as whey protein concentrate, micellar casein and soy protein isolate, followed by glutamine peptides from wheat, flavouring, sucralose and soy lecithin. Despite the name, whey is one of four protein sources, and the label does not say how much of each is in the blend.
Two other UK stockists, Mark Phillips Fitness and Shop4MartialArts, still show a different label for ANABOLIC Whey Matrix. Mark Phillips Fitness lists it under the same product code Bodybuilding Warehouse uses for the Chocolate 5kg pouch (SF87-C-5), with 66.86g of protein per 100g, 20.06g per 30g serving and 19.3g of sugar per 100g. That label lists whey concentrate, milk protein concentrate and soy protein isolate, plus a “Muscle & Strength Complex” of creatine monohydrate, taurine, lysine and glycine. It is the same panel Bodybuilding Warehouse now shows for a separate product, Sports Fuel Whey Matrix.
| ANABOLIC Whey Matrix | Bodybuilding Warehouse page | Label shown by other stockists |
|---|---|---|
| Protein per 30g | 24g (claimed) | 20.06g |
| Sugar per 30g | Under 2g (claimed) | 5.79g |
| Full nutrition panel | Not published | Published |
| Protein sources | Whey concentrate, micellar casein, soy isolate, wheat glutamine peptides | Whey concentrate, milk protein concentrate, soy isolate |
| Added amino acids and creatine | None listed | Creatine, taurine, lysine, glycine |
Checked 3 October 2026 on bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk, shop.markphillipsfitness.co.uk and shop4martialarts.co.uk.
The current ANABOLIC Whey Matrix ingredient list is almost the same as Sports Fuel Premium Protein's, both cost the same at Bodybuilding Warehouse, and both come in the same seven flavours. Premium Protein is the one with a full nutrition panel, which is why we would buy it over ANABOLIC Whey Matrix. If you do buy ANABOLIC Whey Matrix, check the panel printed on the pouch you receive, because two different labels are in circulation.
How much protein is in a scoop of Sports Fuel?
Sports Fuel Premium Protein contains 23.7g of protein in a 30g scoop, or 79.04g per 100g, with 114 kcal and 1.6g of sugar per scoop, according to its Bodybuilding Warehouse label on 3 October 2026. The label prints two protein rows, 80.86g and 79.04g per 100g, and we use the lower one. Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix claims 24g of protein per 30g serving but publishes no other figures.
| Sports Fuel Premium Protein | Per 100g | Per 30g scoop |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 381 kcal | 114 kcal |
| Protein | 79.04g | 23.7g |
| Carbohydrate | 12.56g | 3.8g |
| of which sugars | 5.35g | 1.6g |
| Fat | 0.67g | 0.2g |
| Fibre | 0.13g | 0.04g |
| Salt | 1.00g | 0.3g |
Label on bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk, checked 3 October 2026. The label also prints 80.86g of protein per 100g on a second, unlabelled row.
On paper 79.04g of protein per 100g is more than Myprotein Impact Whey's 72g in Vanilla or Bulk Pure Whey's 71g. The difference is where the protein comes from: those two are whey, while Sports Fuel Premium Protein is a blend of whey concentrate, micellar casein, soy protein isolate and wheat glutamine peptides. For how the different whey types compare, see whey isolate vs concentrate.
How much does Sports Fuel cost per 25g of protein?
Sports Fuel Premium Protein costs 25p per 25g of protein in the 5kg pouch at £39.99 from Bodybuilding Warehouse, checked 3 October 2026, which is 24p per 30g scoop. The same 5kg pouch cost £49.99 on Amazon UK on 3 October 2026, or 32p per 25g of protein. Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix costs the same at both retailers, and works out at 25p per 25g of protein at Bodybuilding Warehouse if you take its 24g per serving claim at face value.
| Product | Pack | Retailer | Price | Per 30g scoop | Per 25g protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Protein | 5kg | Bodybuilding Warehouse | £39.99 | 24p | 25p |
| Premium Protein | 5kg | Amazon UK | £49.99 | 30p | 32p |
| Premium Protein | 1kg | Bodybuilding Warehouse | £14.99 | 45p | 47p |
| ANABOLIC Whey Matrix | 5kg | Bodybuilding Warehouse | £39.99 | 24p | 25p (30p) |
| ANABOLIC Whey Matrix | 5kg | Amazon UK | £49.99 | 30p | 31p (37p) |
| ANABOLIC Whey Matrix | 1kg | Bodybuilding Warehouse | £14.99 | 45p | 47p (56p) |
Checked 3 October 2026. Premium Protein uses its label figure of 79.04g of protein per 100g. ANABOLIC Whey Matrix uses its claim of 24g per 30g serving; the figure in brackets uses the 66.86g per 100g label shown by other stockists.
Buying direct from Bodybuilding Warehouse saved £10 on a 5kg pouch against Amazon UK on 3 October 2026. Whichever label you trust, both Sports Fuel powders sit near the bottom of the UK market on cost per gram of protein. For the full budget field, see our guide to cheap protein powder in the UK or the live cheapest protein ranking.
Is Sports Fuel cheaper than Myprotein and Bulk?
Yes, by a long way. Sports Fuel Premium Protein at 25p per 25g of protein is 78% cheaper per gram of protein than Myprotein Impact Whey in its 3.6kg bag at £1.16, and 73% cheaper than Bulk Pure Whey in its 2.5kg bag at 93p, using prices checked on 2 and 3 October 2026. Compared on Amazon UK alone, Sports Fuel Premium Protein at 32p is 66% cheaper per gram of protein than Bulk Pure Whey at 93p.
| Product | Pack | Retailer, checked | Protein per 100g | Price | Per 25g protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sports Fuel Premium Protein | 5kg | Bodybuilding Warehouse, 3 Oct | 79g | £39.99 | 25p |
| Sports Fuel Premium Protein | 5kg | Amazon UK, 3 Oct | 79g | £49.99 | 32p |
| Bulk Pure Whey (Vanilla) | 2.5kg | Amazon UK, 3 Oct | 71g | £65.69 | 93p |
| Bulk Pure Whey (Vanilla) | 1kg | Amazon UK, 3 Oct | 71g | £29.99 | £1.06 |
| Myprotein Impact Whey (Vanilla) | 3.6kg | myprotein.com, 2 Oct | 72g | £119.99 | £1.16 |
| Myprotein Impact Whey (Vanilla) | 900g | myprotein.com, 2 Oct | 72g | £32.99 | £1.27 |
Myprotein prices are before any discount code; Myprotein runs codes often, which narrows the gap but does not close it. Bulk Pure Whey protein per 100g from bulk.com, checked 3 October 2026. Myprotein Impact Whey Vanilla from myprotein.com, checked 22 September 2026.
The comparison is not like for like. Myprotein Impact Whey and Bulk Pure Whey are whey proteins; Sports Fuel Premium Protein is a whey, casein, soy and wheat blend. If you only care about grams of protein per pound, Sports Fuel wins. If you want whey specifically, the cheapest well-known option in this table is Bulk Pure Whey, and our is Bulk expensive analysis shows where it gets cheaper still. For more brands in between, see Myprotein alternatives UK.

Is Sports Fuel third-party tested, and is it amino spiked?
None of the three Sports Fuel product pages we checked on Bodybuilding Warehouse on 3 October 2026 mentions Informed Sport, Informed Choice or any other third-party batch testing. That does not prove the products are untested, but it means you cannot look up a batch certificate the way you can for a certified powder. If you are tested in your sport, use our list of third-party tested protein powders instead.
On amino spiking, the current labels for Sports Fuel Premium Protein and ANABOLIC Whey Matrix list no free-form amino acids. The older ANABOLIC Whey Matrix label shown by other stockists does list creatine monohydrate, taurine, lysine and glycine without giving amounts. Glycine, taurine and creatine are among the ingredients our protein spiking guide tells you to look for, because they can register as protein in a nitrogen-based test. Without the amounts, that label cannot tell you how much of its 66.86g of protein per 100g comes from intact protein.
The bigger unknown on the current labels is the blend ratio. One of the four protein sources is glutamine peptides, which the label lists as wheat, and wheat protein is a lower-quality protein than whey. Testing commercial protein isolates, Gorissen et al., 2018 measured essential amino acids at 22% of wheat protein against 43% of whey protein, with wheat's lysine content (1.4%) below the WHO/FAO/UNU requirement. The same study notes that blends of animal and plant proteins can come close to animal protein, so a blend is not a problem in itself. The problem is that Sports Fuel does not say how much of each protein is in the pouch.
| Quality signal | Premium Protein | ANABOLIC Whey Matrix |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party testing stated | No | No |
| Full nutrition panel | Yes | No (claim only) |
| Free-form amino acids on current label | None listed | None listed (older label: 4 added) |

Checked 3 October 2026 on bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk. Both products are labelled suitable for vegetarians.
Which Sports Fuel flavours are there, and what do buyers say?
Sports Fuel Premium Protein and ANABOLIC Whey Matrix each come in seven flavours at Bodybuilding Warehouse: Chocolate, Double Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Macaroon, Chocolate Peanut Caramel, Strawberry and Vanilla, checked 3 October 2026. Reviews are split. Sports Fuel Premium Protein holds 135 five-star reviews out of 196 on Bodybuilding Warehouse (69%), but 26 of the 196 (13%) are one star. Sports Fuel ANABOLIC Whey Matrix holds 79 five-star reviews out of 100, with 8 at one star.
| Bodybuilding Warehouse reviews | Premium Protein | ANABOLIC Whey Matrix |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews | 196 | 100 |
| Five star | 135 (69%) | 79 (79%) |
| One star | 26 (13%) | 8 (8%) |
| Flavours | 7 | 7 |
Checked 3 October 2026 on bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk. Neither page breaks ratings down by flavour, so we cannot say which flavour is most popular.
The complaints are mostly about taste and texture. On Premium Protein, one buyer called it “by far the worst tasting protein I've had and a very gritty texture”, while another five-star reviewer said it was cheaper than their previous brand and “actually better on paper”. On ANABOLIC Whey Matrix, one buyer said it “doesn't mix properly and feels and tastes like flour”, and one Strawberry buyer called it “disgustingly sweet”. If taste matters most to you, try a 1kg pouch at £14.99 before committing to 5kg, or see our best tasting protein powder guide.
Is Sports Fuel protein good? Who it suits and who should skip it
Sports Fuel protein is good value if what you want is the most protein for the least money: Sports Fuel Premium Protein gives 23.7g of protein per scoop for 25p per 25g of protein in the 5kg pouch from Bodybuilding Warehouse, checked 3 October 2026. It is not a good choice if you want a pure whey, a disclosed formula or third-party testing.
| Buy Sports Fuel if | Skip Sports Fuel if |
|---|---|
| You want the lowest cost per gram of protein, at 25p per 25g | You want straight whey: Bulk Pure Whey is 93p per 25g of protein |
| You are happy with a whey, casein and soy blend | You avoid soy or wheat, both of which are in the protein blend |
| You get through 5kg before it goes stale | You are drug tested and need a certified batch |
| You will try a 1kg pouch before buying 5kg | Taste matters most: 13% of Premium Protein reviews are one star |
If you do buy Sports Fuel, buy Premium Protein rather than ANABOLIC Whey Matrix. The two have near-identical ingredient lists and the same price, but only Premium Protein publishes a full nutrition panel, and buying direct from Bodybuilding Warehouse was £10 cheaper per 5kg pouch than Amazon UK on 3 October 2026. For every Sports Fuel price we track, see the Sports Fuel brand page, and for other budget brands with a longer review trail, see UK protein brands worth buying.
